Conserving Resources & Responsibly Managing Materials

May 01, 2024

Waste Reduction Programs

In 2023, waste reduction programs across Universal Destinations & Experiences, NBC Sports, DreamWorks, and the Universal Studios Lot diverted over 15,000 lbs of waste from landfill.

Universal Orlando Resorts and Universal Studios Hollywood both increased guest-facing reusables to avoid single use serving items like plates and utensils, enhancing guest experience and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.

The Sustainable Production program has donated over 125,000 meals in the past decade.

In an effort to reuse set materials and wardrobe, NBCU has over 384,000 square feet of repurposed set materials in storage for future NBCU productions to use at no cost.

Water Conservation

We are working to better measure of our water usage across key facilities in order to implement better management and locate reduction opportunities.

NBCU’s Sustainable Design & Construction Standards outline a 40% reduction in water usage from the building’s baseline via water efficiency measures. In addition, the standards offer low-impact development strategies to reduce water runoff from the site.

The Universal Studios Lot uses recycled water for landscape irrigation and uses stormwater treatment devices across the property to filter runoff water before returning to the LA River.
