Reducing NBCUniveral's Emissions & Energy Use

NEED*

May 01, 2024

Clean Energy

At our facilities and on our productions around the world, we are reducing our environmental footprint by sourcing clean and renewable energy.

Since the start of 2023, NBCU has had 2.75 MW of on-site solar power completed or under construction, including installations at Universal Orlando Resort, Universal Studios Japan, the Universal Studios Lot in California, and the local NBC and Telemundo station in Washington D.C.. NBCU plans to install more on-site solar over the next 5 years.

In Illinois, NBCUniversal is an anchor tenant subscribing to 4 MW of renewable energy from two community solar farms to be constructed outside Chicago. Once online, the projects are anticipated to supply the NBC Chicago and Telemundo Chicago stations with more than 6,000 MWh of renewable energy each year. In addition to supplying power to NBCUniversal and other anchor tenants, the developer has committed to devote 20% of each solar farm for low- and moderate-income residential customers to subscribe to renewable energy at a guaranteed discounted rate, expanding clean energy access in the local community.

NBCU works with local utility providers to enroll facilities such as Central St. Giles in London, 30 Rock in NYC, and the Universal Studios Lot in Los Angeles in clean energy programs where available. In 2023, NBCU had enrolled over 21,000 MWh in clean energy programs, equivalent to 2,900 homes electricity use for one year.

Sustainable Design Standards

NBCUniversal has committed to all new offices, studios, and parks to be LEED Gold certified or better. We issued sustainable design and construction standards aligned with the LEED Framework with additional measures to reduce our carbon footprint more directly. These standards will be integrated into construction requirements and apply to major renovations where feasible.

-Universal Beijing Resort is the World’s first LEED Gold theme park

-Universal Studio lot in LA is designated as a LEED Campus and is anticipated to have four LEED Certified buildings [DV(1] by the end of 2024

o   10 UCP – LEED Gold (Certified)

o   Barham Stages – LEED Gold (PENDING)

o   One Universal – LEED Platinum (PENDING)

o   The Commons – LEED Platinum (PENDING)

To set our operators up for success, all new construction will be all electric or electrification ready.

Fleet Electrification

The trams used for Universal Studios Hollywood’s iconic Studio Tour are anticipated to be fully electric by 2025.

NBCU continues to pilot and test clean vehicle technologies both on-road (like the Ford F-150 Lightning and a new electric box truck) and off-road (solar golf carts, electric forklifts) for use around our facilities.
